Warped

I have wanted to weave since my father made this loom for me when I was a child.

It is crude. It is evidence that my father's good intentions far exceeded his woodworking ability.

This little loom is about 8.5" x 11" and I have actually woven little bits of cloth on it.

I have lived in half a dozen different states and have somehow managed to hang onto this little loom.

A number of years ago I bought a gorgeous Schacht Tapestry Loom. It sat in a corner of the basement, still in its original packaging, until a few months ago.

I finally got it out and realized that without a floor stand it really wasn't possible for me to use it. I didn't have enough table space anyplace. Plus, it is so big it has a tendency to fall over. Just when I would start to warp it, it would tip over and I would once again find myself in a tangle of threads.

So my Festivus present to myself was the floor stand which actually cost more than the loom did, even tho I found it relatively cheap at the Dick Blick Art Materials factory outlet in Galesburg.

The loom looks so beautiful on the trestle stand. And it is so large. It dwarfs the fireplace.

I'll need to move it. I haven't even warped it yet and the cat-of-many-names is already fascinated by it! Her name is actually Huitaca but she also goes by Little Cat, Treasure, Precious, Gift, Fluff-Butt and Baby Cat, being the youngest of our four felines.

I guess now that the world knows I have it put together I feel obligated to learn how to actually weave something.

2008 New Year's Resolutions

Note to self: try to keep at least one!

  • To work on becoming a Certified Laughter Leader
  • To learn to weave
  • To reduce the amount of STUFF that I have

I Can Do This

Jeff has been urging me to write Moodle curriculum for... well, a really long time. I do a lot of things for a living but my degree is actually in Instructional Systems Technology so Moodle really does make sense for me.

I decided to call my Moodle "I Can Do This." The first "course" is online. Its a free "Computer Basics" course. This course came out of computer workshops I teach. I am always kinda stunned at how some really experienced computer users don't know some of the most basic techniques.

I am developing a training module for genealogy software and started it off with this lesson. Then I realized I would probably use this as the first lesson for EVERYTHING I want to teach. It seemed natural to give it away for free. After all, everyone likes "free."

I really need to get back to cleaning up my own website. It looks like crap and part of it doesn't even load.

I need to clone myself.

Lo-Tech Nano

My old, old, old workhorse of a computer is about to die. I need it for work. All my work. For prepping for computer workshops I teach as well as for writing and web design. And then there is the hobby stuff. And NanoWrimo.

Solution? My good old Palm V someone gave me years ago with an external keyboard. Hey, this thing actually works! I'll probably use it a lot more in the future for other things.

Folded up, the keyboard is not much larger than the Palm V. This is how it looks opened out. Once you get used to the taller screen, it actually shows quite a bit of text. I don't even use word processing software with it.

I use the built-in Memo feature. I name the memos in sequential order so I know the scene order. The memos get uploaded to the PC via a routine HotSync and then I cut and paste into Word. I cut-and-paste fast so it ain't no thang.
I could spend money on software to streamline that but I'm trying to do this on the cheap.

If I could find a Dana or Neo dirtcheap on eBay, I might consider it sometime. But this works for now.

Gearing up for NanoWrimo

I am down to 26 hours until time to start writing for NanoWrimo.

In the last 26 hours, I have checked "Riders of the Purple Sage" out of the library and bought a copy of "Pay It Foward" and a cd by
South Side Cindy & The Slip-Tones online. I got lost on foot in downtown Peoria. I knew I shoulda taken the Garmin with me.... I emailed someone two corrections to their website. (I'm SO helpful sometimes.) And I have a kitten napping next to me.

Yes, this really is writing.

NanoWrimo Update

I normally write non-fiction but I will be delving into fiction for the first time ever with NanoWrimo (National Novel Writing Month). I'm finishing up the outlining process and gearing up for Nov. 1 by putting my notes on Google Docs so they can follow me wherever I am. That's going to be important since my husband and I are down to one laptop between us.

I can -- and do -- write anywhere and anytime but we'll probably drop into some of the local write-ins. And I can't do that without a laptop.

1883 Pensioner list for Oregon

The "List of Pensioners on the Roll January 1, 1883" for the entire state of Oregon has just been completed! All 23 individual counties in existance in Oregon in 1883 have a seperate page for just their county, and a combined list for the entire state of Oregon was also produced.

You can view the entire state list here:
http://genealogytrails.com/ore/oregon/military/1883pen.html

On 8 Dec 1882, the US Senate passed a resolution to enumerate, by town, county, and state, all individuals receiving a pension. This list is taken from that document. It is used today as a major genealogical source for Civil War and the War of 1812 pensioners. Pensioners in this transcribed version of the original document are listed by county, post office and alphabetically by name.

My thanks to Shauna for her help in putting the various county files onto their respective county pages. I couldn't have completed this without her.

Lots of obits have been added over the past week under most letters
Lori & I have also been working on for some time now, going to the cemeteries here in Butler County and taking pictures of the headstones and uploading them. So be sure and check that out (although it'll take you off our site, so be sure and come back often!) New items added almost daily....
